A Different Look at Dave.
By Cathy McIntyre.
I know Dave’s biographical material – both professional and personal – is plenty to read, however, I want to add a bit of color.
I met Dave at the 82nd Airborne Sport Parachute Club in Ft. Bragg, NC when I was an undergrad at Fayetteville State University. My father, MSG Fred Faas, was still active duty Army, and I was still living at home with my family. I had grown up watching my father jump with the 82nd, and like all the other Army kids, I wanted to jump when I was old enough. I joined the club, took lessons and I had already advanced enough to be a jump master when Dave was assigned as the club’s safety officer. The club jump masters would spend a week training students in sport parachuting techniques – free fall and canopy control, then spend Saturdays putting them out for their 1st jumps. The evenings after their first jumps were usually spent celebrating and telling stories- some true- at a pizza place where the beer flowed. Dave & I did not drink so we were able to actually have conversations – and after a year or so, finally decided to marry. We have been a pretty good team ever since.
We quit parachuting when the kids came along, but began fishing, skiing and hiking in West Point, NY, as a family when they were old enough. Then, SCUBA when we were assigned to Hawaii for 4 years! Dave has always tried to do things that the boys would be proud to have accomplished – including family motorcycling while they were still in school. We are pleased that both sons are following his lead with their own children: swimming, family walks, and row boats. (Three yr. old Charlie caught his first fish the other day – it was a turtle!)
We have the two sons – Roy & Sam. They are 4 and half years apart, but ended up marrying the same summer and having their children close together. Roy & Cheryl met in Baghdad while assigned there. Sam & Carolyn met at UNT. The older grandchildren –Jonathan & Charlie were born within 6 months of each other. Their next children, Mary & Roger were born within a month of each other. That was a busy summer!
Roy and his family live in Louisiana where he works for an oil company ; they are expecting our next grandchild in November. Sam & his family live at Hurlburt Field ,FL, where he is assigned as an AF pilot. We wish they lived closer, but we are committed to seeing them every 3 months or so; we want the grandchildren to have good memories of Texas and hope they eventually come here for college. We have their rooms ready!
So that’s us – see you on the campaign trail,
